30th March: Setting off.....

Wednesday 30th March:

Travelled to JFK (8hrs), stayed in Days Inn with 12" pizza (12hrs)
5am rise to catch 4 hr flight to Haiti
.....I'm on my way!

Thursday 31st March:

(12:30pm) Arrive in Haiti.
Hustled passed some UN soldiers (eerie!) to my shuttle pick up from many hoping to make a dollar or two.
My shuttle - a beat up jeep, with smashed windscreen and dodgy electrics!!
2 hr journey from airport to basecamp (Leogane) was jaw dropping, especially through the capital Port-au-prince - the city which took the brunt of the tragic 2010 earthquake - which took over 300,000 lives and left over 1.5 million people homeless; Seeing pictures on TV is one thing, but to see it with your own eyes is very unsettling!
[No pics yet I'm afraid - advised against due to sensitivity]

(approx. 2pm) Arrive in Leogane.
get a brief tour of the base and settle in. Have my first bucket cold water shower.......how refreshing!

My bunk - 2nd on the right

7pm meeting - have to stand up and introduce myself to the rest of the volunteers (approx 65)
Chance to meet and chat to others in Joe's bar tonight (10m from camp) until 10pm curfew and lights out!

Friday 1st April:

Been up since 4:30am....Bloody roosters have no concept of time!
I have orientation (intro) this morning, followed by rubbling or demo( -lition) this pm.
Time to get hands dirty.... Marvelous

Volunte Lokal (local volunteer) graduation in Joe's this evening. Nice way to wind down after my first day of rubbling. Local beer - Prestige, only 5.6% !

2 day weekend this week. Time to take in my surroundings and take some pics. click link on right of blog to see next post......
Bye for now!
